Data response question *see below* (due end of Tuesday lesson)
2021-2022
Date Due
Nov. 9, 2021
Additional Info
Data response question on earthquakes (as discussed in class). This is due at the end of Tuesday's lesson (i.e. you will have homework (20 minutes) plus a lesson (40 minutes) to work on this. I will collect it in at the end of Tuesday's lesson.
Tip:
Use the acronym T.E.A.A to help you.
- Trend - what is the overriding trend/pattern
- Evidence - what data/stats illustrate this trend
- Analysis - why might this trend exist
- Anomalies - are there any pieces of data that don't fit the main trend? Why might these exist?
Suggested structure:
- No need for an intro, but if it helps you feel free to do a very short one where you outline your argument.
- Discuss Fig 1a as we did in class i.e. different magnitudes and different levels of development, but earthquakes all taking place at a similar point in time.
- Social analysis (mainly focusing on the resources in Fig 1b). Look to establish trends in terms of which country suffered the most socially (i.e. deaths, injuries, homelessness). Provide evidence (stats). Then try to explain why these trends might exist (e.g. magnitude of earthquake, development of country, population density...) Then look to see whether there are any anomalies to the trend. Why might these exist? Do any of the graphs link to each other (i.e. support each other or go against each other)?
- Economic analysis (focusing on the resources in Fig 1c). This will be very similar in style to your social analysis. You might look to link back to the social analysis. Do the countries that suffer the most socially also suffer the most economically?
- No need for a conclusion, but if it helps you feel free to do a very short one where you outline your argument.
