Periodic Table and Solubility test - revision

2024-2025

7W/Ch - Mr Russell (Fri)

Date Due

Feb. 14, 2025

Additional Info
This Friday, I will tell you about the upcoming Periodic Table and Solutions test. The test will be on Friday 14th February. I am letting you know in advance, so that you can have some time to prepare for it. I will give you this week and next week's homework time to devote to it. Note that we haven't actually covered Solutions yet so I want you to be aware of what you need to focus on.

The test will cover:

INTRO TO PERIODIC TABLE

Understand the terms 'group' and 'period'

Know where to find metals & non-metals on the Periodic Table, including the groups 'alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals and noble gases.

ELEMENTAL SYMBOLS

Learn symbols of common elements (first 20 plus iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), silver (Ag), and gold (Au))

ATOMS, ELEMENTS AND COMPOUNDS

Define: atom, element, molecule, compound and mixture

Know elements join together in definite proportions to form compounds

Compounds are made in chemical reactions that are not easily reversible

Be able to explain and work out the number and type of each element in a compound given the formula

CONSERVATION OF MASS & BALANCING EQUATIONS

Mass is not created or destroyed during a chemical reaction

Be able to balance given equations

SOLUTIONS AND SOLUBILITY

Know solutions of solid in liquid as the commonest type of mixture

Define: solute, solvent, dissolve, soluble, insoluble, suspension, saturated solution, aqueous solution

Know that some solutes dissolve in different solvents

SOLUBILITY AND TEMPERATURE

Know solids increase in solubility with increase in temperature

Know gases become less soluble with increasing temperature

Be able to plot a (solubility) graph and interpret it
